Overpolicing on campus can instill fear in students due to UCPD’s long history of racialized policing. Thus, law enforcement should not have a sustained presence on college campuses. UCPD must withdraw their stationed police officers, especially considering reports of biased policing, and reduce PSA and CSO activity.
Critics claim DEI initiatives weaken academic standards by lowering expectations in the name of equity. “That’s not true,” Oppenheimer countered. “What diversity, equity and inclusion programs do is broaden the pool and require us to be more self-reflective. I think that means we raise our standards.”
Students can now see the number of submitted requests and the approval status for each one, Smith said. She added that professors can also see students’ verifications for accommodations, allowing them to contact their students directly instead of going through CAE staff.
For students who rely on elevators to move through campus, an “Out of Service” sign does not indicate a minor inconvenience. It creates a daunting sense of exclusion.

In 2015, she was the first wheelchair user to appear on Broadway, starring as Anna in the musical, Spring Awakening. For her performance as Ado Annie Carnes in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma!, Stroker became the first wheelchair user to win a Tony Award in 2019.
