Such an emphasis on how student wellness intersects with our institutional reputation risks substituting the latter for the former, as recent history has shown us. Indeed, pursuing superficial initiatives that don’t address the real problems on Dartmouth’s campus, and using them as public relations tools to bolster Dartmouth’s image, is perhaps the hallmark of our administration.
“Bugonia” deals with heavy themes: wealth inequality, mental disabilities, conspiracy theories and corporate violence. The movie seems to want to comment on many of these things, but only ever uses them as plot devices.
Vaccination is not only a gift to yourself, but also to your roommates, classmates and friends. Getting vaccinated is an especially effective way to provide practical support to people who are elderly or disabled.
I understand the concern about distraction in class. However, for many disabled students, so-called “device-free” classrooms do not promote learning or focus. They exclude us from it.
Outsourcing even more of our human interaction to robots in this way will only serve to make us more sad, disaffected and alienated from our peers and the real world.
Since his book’s publication in June 2024, Tatel said he’s had “hundreds” of conversations with others who had similar experiences disguising various disabilities. He says he “didn’t know” how common it was for people to hide their disabilities until writing the book.

An actor, singer, and wheelchair user, Ali Stroker has been a trailblazer for disability representation on the stage. She was the first wheelchair user to graduate from the Tisch School of the Arts Drama Department at New York University. In 2015, she was the first wheelchair user to appear on Broadway, starring as Anna in the musical, Spring Awakening. For her performance as Ado Annie Carnes in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma!, Stroker became the first wheelchair user to win a Tony Award in 2019.
