For Hart, it is an issue not just of representation but also respect—a sentiment captured in their frustration that even direct communication with decision-makers might go unheard. “I feel like I could be put in a room with the board of trustees, and I could tell them straight to the face what I need, and I think they wouldn’t listen,” Hart added.
The lawsuit further contends that the gate closures violate the Americans with Disabilities Act by disproportionately burdening disabled and elderly residents, including a Morningside Heights resident whom Skyler spoke to.
Wyatt and other wheelchair users at Columbia contend with a convoluted system of disability infrastructure on the Morningside Heights campus that routinely fails to address their needs. From malfunctioning lifts to sweltering tunnels, the infrastructure meant to improve campus accessibility often inhibits it.
As Glendining herself says, “normal is a statistical concept, and that’s all.”

An actor, singer, and wheelchair user, Ali Stroker has been a trailblazer for disability representation on the stage. She was the first wheelchair user to graduate from the Tisch School of the Arts Drama Department at New York University. In 2015, she was the first wheelchair user to appear on Broadway, starring as Anna in the musical, Spring Awakening. For her performance as Ado Annie Carnes in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma!, Stroker became the first wheelchair user to win a Tony Award in 2019.
