The thought of Olmstead protections being rolled back is frightening to disability rights advocates, who recall with horror the not-so-long-gone era when warehousing intellectually and developmentally disabled people in so-called state schools was the norm.
Green told Truthout that the effort to open Massachusetts’s records grew out of a recognition that a return to the mass warehousing of disabled people in inhumane conditions remains a looming threat. “Around us, the pressure is rising to institutionalize more and more disabled people,” he said.

An actor, singer, and wheelchair user, Ali Stroker has been a trailblazer for disability representation on the stage. She was the first wheelchair user to graduate from the Tisch School of the Arts Drama Department at New York University. In 2015, she was the first wheelchair user to appear on Broadway, starring as Anna in the musical, Spring Awakening. For her performance as Ado Annie Carnes in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma!, Stroker became the first wheelchair user to win a Tony Award in 2019.
