During the spring 2025 semester, students with disabilities spoke with The Hustler, alleging that Vanderbilt Facilities and Student Access Services were not doing enough to quickly fulfill accommodation requests and ensure campus remains accessible. This semester, The Hustler re-interviewed Vanderbilt students and faculty on if they have experienced a change with SAS accommodations and accessibility on campus with construction projects.
“It is important to note that accessibility is not the same as inclusion,” Briggs said in a message to The Hustler. “Inclusion, to me, goes beyond simply providing access — it is about creating environments where people feel valued, supported and able to participate fully.”
June 9, 2019. Ali Stroker wins Best Featured Actress in a Musical at the 73rd Annual Tony Awards. An actor, singer, and wheelchair user, Ali Stroker has been a trailblazer for disability representation on the stage. She was the first wheelchair user to graduate from the Tisch School of the Arts Drama Department at New York University. In 2015, she was the first wheelchair user to appear on Broadway, starring as Anna in the musical, Spring Awakening. For her performance as Ado Annie Carnes in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma!, Stroker became the first wheelchair user to win a Tony Award in 2019.
