Dr. Rubin explained that many Gen Xers were raised by baby boomers who encouraged independence, sometimes to the point of neglect. This could result in Gen X becoming overprotective “snowplow” parents, smoothing every obstacle in their kids’ paths. “The issue with this parenting style is that it does not allow a kid to become independent,” Rubin said. “It’s hard to grow up when you’re never allowed to fall.”
